Main Purpose and Function
The Engineering Assistant III prepares electrical/traffic signal CAD designs for new traffic signals, traffic signal modifications, and data collection systems for capital programs.
Key Contacts and Reporting Relationships
The position reports to the traffic signal Civil Engineer II and works closely with the Civil Engineer I, Engineering Assistant IV, and Electrical Design Technicians.
Specific Duties/Responsibilities
• Creates complex traffic signal and electrical CAD design construction drawings, including; plan, detail, profile, cross-section, and elevation drawings.
• Creates record drawings of completed work.
• Accurately integrates external contractor design plans with internal street surveys, GIS and existing traffic signal information.
• Reviews contractor electrical drawings.
• Performs analysis of underground utility data to minimize risks of conflicts with 3rd party utilities such as high-pressure gas, high voltage electrical, and fibre optic communication ducts.
• Identifies conflicts between proposed street geometric designs and traffic signal designs and recommend options.
• Adheres to MUTCD, TAC and ITE standards for traffic signal design.
• Represents CAD design group at field design meetings and new signal commissioning.
• Follows organizational quality management standards and documentation protocol.
• Assists Senior Engineer in hiring of new staff. Develops and supervises technical proficiency testing for new candidates.
• Assists in the training and supervision of junior staff as required.
• Creates and manages CAD design standards necessary for EGBC QMS.
• Produces sign for signalized intersections.
• Other duties/responsibilities as assigned
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Education and Experience:
Completion of grade 12, supplemented by technical courses in engineering or related area of study, plus considerable related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience’
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Working knowledge of the City’s street system, transportation policies and regulations, the Street & Traffic By-Law, the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices, Traffic Control Manual for Work on Roadways
- Sound knowledge of engineering design principles and methods, and of engineering mathematics
- Sound knowledge of departmental procedures relating to various engineering projects
- Working knowledge of traffic signal construction methods and materials.
- Advanced computer drafting skills
- Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications and perform design drafting
- Excellent knowledge of Auto CAD, Excel, and Word
- Proficiency in GIS software would be considered an asset
- Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather is required.
- Ability to problem solve with accuracy in a technical environment with little or no supervision.
- Meet tight timelines in a multi-task environment.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to provide accurate and thorough information to the public.
- Interpersonal skills in establishing and maintaining a cooperative and effective working relationship with staff.
- Ability to meet transportation needs.
Where operationally appropriate and subject to change, the City of Vancouver has a Flexible Work Program. This program allows staff to work remotely 1 – 4 days a week from locations that are a daily commutable distance from their work at a City worksite. At this time this position is eligible to be part of the Flexible Work Program.
