Role Responsibilities
Are you passionate about ensuring the sustainability of the forest resource now and into the future? Are you looking for an opportunity to apply your knowledge of geomatics, data science and expertise in programing to support forest management and related regulatory oversight for Alberta?
The Spatial Resource Analyst is an intermediate professional position in the Reforestation, Inventory and Biometrics Section in the Forest Stewardship and Trade Branch. The position looks after regulatory spatial datasets and is responsible for ensuring that these datasets are managed as well as made available to users.
The primary responsibilities of this role include:
• Designing, developing, and implementing applications and process enhancements (such as submission, audit, and publication) to enhance the robustness, timeliness, and accessibility of regulatory data
• Ensuring an accurate and timely understanding of our forest resources to maintain sustainable harvest levels as well as preserve ecological, economic and social values associated with sustainable forest management
• Serving as the data manager for various key forestry datasets, playing a foundational role in facilitating sustainable forest management practices in the province
• Providing unique analytical expertise, support and guidance to technical and professional stakeholders in the forestry industry, service providers as well as government personnel regarding spatial data management
• This role demands a combination of robust technical and analytical skills, proficient writing abilities and strong communication skills

Qualifications
Education:
The minimum requirement for this role is University graduation in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology plus 2 years progressively responsible related experience; or equivalent
Equivalency:
• Directly related experience and or education may be considered on a one year of education for one year of experience or vise versa such as a two-year diploma supplemented by four (4) years of related experience
Additional Requirements:
• An Applied Degree or diploma in Geographic Information Systems from an accredited university (or equivalent)
• Advanced skills for data modelling, visualization, dashboards, and data management using statistical software (e.g. SAS, R, PowerBI or C#)
• Working knowledge of legislation, policies and standards that impact public and forest lands management in Alberta
• Knowledge of silviculture, forest ecology, reforestation, vegetation inventories, and forest management principles

This is a full-time, temporary opportunity located in Edmonton. The position’s hours of work are Monday to Friday, 8:15 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., 36.25 hours a week.
